Success is a matter of adjusting one's efforts to obstacles, and one's abilities to a service needed by others. (Henry Ford)
Some people don't mind purchasing goods and services from faceless companies, while others prefer to know who they are dealing with. I am of this type. I prefer to know who I am buying stuff from... Can I trust them? What's their angle? Do they care about my needs? I included this personal Bio for those of you who want to know more about me, Todd Donald, a Chicago Area Web Designer.
Todd Donald... Hard Working and Easy To Trust.
Writing a personal Biography is not really my forte'. I'll give it a whirl and let the chips land where they may.
For the past six years I've been doing Internet marketing and website design projects. Perhaps one day it'll turn into more of a real business, instead of me just being busy, but to date it's technically a hobby because I spend more money and time than I get back out of it. It's a labor of love and I have a passion for helping people, that's my big reward.
Aside from running doing Internet Marketing and website design for DJs, I'm usually working full time too. I've worked a bunch - starting when I was 13. I've been in a number of occupations and industries, but primarily most of my working career has been in machinery manufacturing and service, with an equal time spent in the automotive collision repair industry. I've worked at all levels, from grunt to management.
One of the most frequent questions I am asked is: "Are You a DJ?". The answer is NO, I am not a DJ. I have done some hobby Disc Jockeying, but primarily to test and tune my custom designed, hand-crafted speakers aptly named Speakerboy. Because I have done some Deejay gigs and also hung out with "real djs" while they demo my speakers, I do have a hands-on understanding of that hobby and profession. Truth be told, I give Mobile DJs a lot of credit. Spending holidays and weekends with complete strangers trying to entertain them and make their celebration wonderful takes a special amount of dedication and self sacrifice. If you're reading this and you're new to the DJ industry, only time will tell if you've got what it takes.
At this point I typically explain what sort of ties I have to the DJ Community, (which is a pretty tight-knit group of about 100,000 or more entrepreneurs who prefer to do business B2B style). Well... I'm no Mother Theresa, but since 2002 I have managed to help lots of mobile entertainers score gigs they perhaps otherwise would not have had opportunities for, via FreeDJAmerica.com. I've also built a bunch of websites for DJs. I began a campaign I named the DJ Unification Project in 2006 to increase awareness of Google Page Rank and to help DJs know they can work together in their marketing efforts and linking strategies in an effort to stave of the big commercial sites like EBay, Craigslist, MySpace and the 1000's of useless wedding directories and "Made for Adsense" landing pages that have popped-up in the past couple of years which are literally polluting the organic search results at major search engines.
The nest question I am often asked is "If you're not a DJ, how did you get involved in the DJ industry?". Ah Ha- That's a great question and the answer is slightly complex. I've always had the entrepreneurial spirit and like I mentioned before, I build speakers. My first website Free DJ America was created as a sort of launching pad for the speakers. In some spurt of brain activity, I thought that I could nationalize what I did, (playing my speakers at parties). The original concept was to have a network of DJs who would basically be representatives. I would supply them with the speakers and they would make themselves available for free-parties (2 hour limit on non-typical days)... The "Free DJ" concept seemed like a win-win and something party planning clients would be interested in. Truth be told, the directory soon took a life of it's own and speakers took a back seat. I still pursue my Pro DJ Speakers project, and am currently trying to find investors, employees, partners, etc.
How I thought of a DJ Directory to begin with, was that at the time, my wife Tamara was an event planner for Motorola. She was let loose in the massive Motorola Restructure of the late 1990's - Early 2000's. What I knew however, was that she had to spend a ton of time trying to find vendors for her events. It was amazingly difficult to find and contact DJs. I realized there had to be an easier way, so I brainstormed a DJ Directory. I had no clue that at that time there were also a handful of others who had also thought of the concept including Scott from WeDJ, Brian from AllTimeFavorites and Ryan from ProDJ. The other players in this market were the ADJA and the USODJA. I found their sites while surfing the web for Djs to invite to my directory.
The idea that it was hard to find a DJ and that I did not know other DJ directories existed, may seem unimaginable now, but trust me... The search engines of yesteryear were horrible and would return all sorts of wacky unrelated results. Also, there were massive numbers of Tripod and Geo-Cities sites which DJs had built. These atrocities seemed to rule the search engines and aside from crippling your 386sx powered Windows 3.1 PC with animated gifs, embedded music, java powered everything and pop-ups galore, would typically cause the much feared Windows "Blue Screen of Death", the "Fatal Error" which would bring you to a complete halt about 50 times per day. If the fatal crashes and hangs which resulted from those crappy free websites wasn't enough, a party planner also had to deal with the impossible to contact by email DJ... Back then DJs were experimenting with free email services, from hotmail to yahoo and the dreaded mailer form, (a contact method on their site which looked like a form, but used your default email program to send it), so the challenge became contacting a DJ by email and actually having it go through. Of course you almost always had to email them because nobody wanted their phone number on a website. It was a hilariously difficult scenario indeed! The other comical thing was, that back then I don't think that anyone realized (at least not most DJs), that the person viewing their website DID NOT automatically know where they were located. In other words, DJs would publish free sites, (or even ones they had done professionally), and somehow thought that only people in their city or town could pull up the website. They included zero information regarding geographic reference. Of course some party planners did not knwo any better either - some still don't realize that just because they managed to see your website does not mean that you magically know where they are or where their event will be held. The anonymous email goes something like this: "Planning a birthday - Please tell me how much it will cost - Thanks Michelle"... All you have is an email address to reply to!
There's nothing like the DJ sites of yesteryear though, that's for sure! I have actually created a sort of tribute to the old style of DJ sites you can see: World's Greatest DJ.
So... That's pretty much my story and how I became involved in the DJ industry. Since those humble beginnings I have managed to help many thousands of party and wedding planners find their DJs, so I guess I did something right! I hope you'll let me help you with the same mission! If you would like to know even more about me (careful- proceed with caution), see my profile Todd Donald at My Space © 2008 Todd Donald
